Styled as an informal upright, this unique tree has feature deadwood (known as 'jin' and 'shari') throughout the canopy. This technique is used to create a sense of age and weathering of the tree and is commonly applied to replicate the damage caused by cyclones in coastal Japan. The needle size has been substantially reduced through many years of decandling (a pruning technique used on two-needle pines).
